Highlights on the Workshop on National Indicators
Bujumbura (Burundi), 27–31 January 2025
Overview
The Capacity for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development (CEBioS) program, financed by the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGD) and hosted at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), organized a regional workshop on national indicators in Bujumbura, Burundi.
To support one of its strategic objectives — “Authorities, decision-makers and political leaders, develop and implement relevant policies...” — CEBioS invited around 25 participants: 8 from Benin, 7 from DRC, and the rest from Burundi.
Professor Jean Cossi GANGLO was invited as GBIF-Benin node manager. This report summarizes the key highlights of the workshop, particularly the synergy between GBIF and CEBioS.
Key Highlights
- NSAPB Revision Progress: Each country presented its approaches for revising national strategies and indicators aligned with the Kunming-Montreal GBF.
- Data Mobilization: CEBioS and GBIF emphasized data collection and publication. GBIF-Benin shared its achievements in academic and technical capacity building.
Presentations
From the CEBioS Team
Biodiversity data mobilization includes collecting, organizing, and sharing data. CEBioS handles data beyond GBIF, including ecological, genetic, and socio-economic information.
Presentation of GBIF and GBIF-Benin
The presentation introduced GBIF’s mission, its global network, and the challenges faced by GBIF-Africa (notably financial and institutional issues). GBIF-Benin presented its work in mobilizing data and building academic capacity, which drew interest from other institutions—one of which joined GBIF during the workshop.
